What to do at Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve

Like Irvington, Virginia, Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is a hidden gem on the Chesapeake Bay. Quiet, protected places like this are often overshadowed by popular coastal tourist destinations like Virginia Beach or Ocean City, Maryland. But that’s exactly the point of visiting places like Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve – to see what the Chesapeake Bay was once like, and to experience small town America at its absolute finest.

Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is a 20-minute drive to the northeast of our Irvington, Virginia Bed and Breakfast. It’s situated on the stunning western shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Here, you’ll find an astonishing diversity of ecosystems, all serving as vital habitats for various insects, invertebrates, birds, and more. In fact, Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is an important wintering area for migrating waterfowl and songbirds. Throughout the rest of the year, you can often find eagles, osprey, and northern harriers, not to mention some rare species of protected shorebirds, among these protected waterways.

There are only eleven parking spaces in the Hughlett Point Natural Preserve lot, which effectually limits the crowd sizes in this protected area. We recommend heading here earlier in the day to secure a spot. Once there, you’ll encounter several trails, a woodland boardwalk, wildlife viewing platforms, and interpretive signs to help you make the most of your time.

You might also consider adding a stop to Dameron Marsh Natural Area Preserve, just a few more minutes north of Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve, which contains more than 300 acres of protected wetlands and vital shorebird habitat. Like Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve, you’ll find a small parking lot, walking trails, a boardwalk, and a wildlife viewing platform. There’s also a designated “hand-carry” boat put-in site for kayaking and canoeing in these protected waters.
